What is the San Antonio Cat Cafe?
In a nutshell, it'll be a fun, easygoing place for you to kick back and relax in the company of adoptable cats.
We'll feature lots of adoptable kitties from rescue organizations, and we will partner with local artists, musicians and small businesses to make it a real community experience.
You could just listen to live music and check out the ever-changing art gallery, enjoy some delicious treats and beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), talk to the person you came with (imagine that!), or meet someone new who totally appreciates that cat shirt you're wearing. And what will the kitties do while you hang out? Whatever they want, of course. They're cats, and clearly they have their own agendas.
What do you "do" in a cat cafe?
When you first walk in, you check in, sign the waiver if you are a first-timer, and pay an entry fee which helps pay for the kitties' care. Then, you go through a door to the cat area, where you can wander around petting kitties or find a seat and let the cats come to you.
You may see people cuddling with cats, reading books, watching movies, or trying to take cute kitty pics and selfies with the cats. It's really up to you what you do while you are in there as long as you are nice to the cats. You could even take a cat-nap if you like. The cats will be happy to show you how it's done. They're experts and love to teach by example.
A staff member can help you with whatever food and drinks you need and will happily answer your cat questions. The food prep (if any) happens away from the cats, so don't you worry about that. You just come and have a good time, and while you're there, if you see any upcoming classes or events that interest you, sign up, or just jump right into one happening at the time (if space is available).
Basically, the cat cafe is a relaxing space where you'll find feline fun; it's the place where you can sit with a cat on your lap while listening to music, playing on the Internet, talking with friends, or doing whatever you like while socializing the kitties in preparation for their furever homes. You might even fall in love with a particular cat and build such a strong relationship that you will just have to adopt it yourself! (Not that day, though. There's a process.)
Come with friends or family, or come by yourself. The cats don't care. Just come and unwind. It's relaxed, fun, and you can actually hear yourself think. Plus, you're surrounded by cats.
So, no matter when you come, it will be a wonderful experience, and best of all, the kitties will live happily ever after. Of course, to get to that happy ending, we go through a lot of food, toys, treats and supplies. You can also help the cats by making a tax-deductible donation of money or goods for our thrift store, and you will see the results in their slow-blinking "I love you" eyes.
Where does the money go?
We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so every dollar that goes into the San Antonio Cat Cafe is put to good use. We aren't here to get rich; we're here to rescue cats from bad situations, prevent unwanted kittens from future tragedies, and find homes for otherwise homeless cats. That's it.
While the kitties are under our care, we want them to live well. They'll have a wide array of things to keep them happy. Rest assured, one or more vets will make sure they are in good health and are up to date on all of their vaccinations. Part of the entry fee you pay takes care of their food, treats, toys, litter, vet care, and so on. The other part pays rent, utilities, and other necessities of keeping the place open to continue helping kitties.
Where did this idea originate?
Cat cafes began in Asia (Taiwan, specifically) where people who lived in apartments couldn't have cats but still wanted a place to enjoy spending time with them. After several others opened in Japan and throughout Asia, we've seen them pop up in France, Austria, Ireland, Australia, England, and various places around the globe. It wasn't until recently that they started showing up stateside. They're now popping up in cities all over the US.
Cat cafes are great because more cats are being adopted into loving furever homes because of the amount of socialization the cats get while in the cafe. The public is also getting educated about responsible pet ownership, and patrons of the cafe are relaxing and enjoying themselves, and the cats are getting good homes. It's a win-win-win!
What does the word "community" mean to us?
Answer: People and small businesses working together and supporting each other while helping cats. We are partnering with some fantastic local businesses that will make our place really fun and interesting, and it's all for a good cause. We also have our own community outreach programs with education classes and TNR projects, and part of your donations will help us continue these very important missions. We also aim to include local artists and musicians into our venues in various ways, so we can give back and enhance our culture here in San Antonio.
How much does a cat cafe need to operate?
Unfortunately, it's not cheap.
Rent (thousands per month, our largest recurring expense)
Building permits, contractors, insurance, maintenance services, legal fees, security system, etc.
Utilities, point-of-sale software, service contract fees, TV and WiFi
Cat amenities like cat trees, ramps, shelves, cubbies, perches, stairs, etc.
Cafe inventory and equipment
Cat food, litter, toys, bedding, and supplies
Payroll (if there are paid employees)
Incidentals & Emergencies
and, if we get a mixed beverage permit, that costs a lot of money
We welcome other local businesses who want to get involved in with the San Antonio Cat Cafe, and we encourage company and individual sponsorships. We'll be happy to recognize any sponsors who wish to be known to the public.
With your donations, you can help us surpass all expectations and build the best cat cafe around. No dollar goes wasted!
Your donation is fully tax deductible according to IRS guidelines since we are a charity organization, and your generosity is appreciated. Our EIN is available to donors upon request.

Resident & Adoptable Cats
Most (if not all) of our cats are adoptable and come to us from non-profit organizations, fosters, and individuals. We are a rescue, so they may be beautiful housecats needing rehoming or they may be street rescues recovering from some not-so-perfect situations. regardless of their past, they are looking forward to a future with a person or people who will love them forever and give them lots of cuddles and kisses. So, your visits help socialize the cats and prepare them for their forever homes.
The purpose of the cat lounge is to give people a comfortable place to relax like they would at home and interact with the cats to see how everyone's personalities match up for possible adoption.
We recommend coming a few times to bond with the cat(s) you have your eye on, just to make sure you are a good fit for each other. It would be better to change your mind here than after you've taken the cat(s) home and have it not work out. Even though we have a "no questions asked" unlimited time return policy, you should be able to tell after multiple visits if you've chosen the cat that will bring you the most joy. Naturally, while you are here, it will be clear which cats are interested in you, too.
There may be some kitties at the cat cafe that are not available for adoption for some reason or another, but we still want you to play with them and give them lots of love, regardless.
So, come visit us and meet your awesome future feline companion.
